A Christmas bonus is a one-off payment: the wage tax on it is the difference between the tax on your annual salary with and without the bonus, so it is taxed at your marginal rate. Social contributions (about 21 % for the employee) apply only up to the yearly contribution ceilings.
In 2026 the basic allowance is €12,348 and the solidarity surcharge only applies above €20,350 of annual wage tax, so most employees pay none.
Disclaimer: figures for 2026 with a simplified payroll method (classes I–IV, statutory health insurance). Non-binding estimate without guarantee or liability; it is not tax, legal or payroll advice. Your employer’s payslip is what counts.
Frequently asked questions
How much is left of €3,000 with a €45,000 salary?
About €1,654.50 in tax class I without church tax: roughly €711 wage tax and €634.50 social security.
Why is so much deducted from the Christmas bonus?
It is added on top of your salary, so it is taxed at your highest marginal rate, and social contributions apply in full unless you are already above the ceilings.
