Speed, Distance & Time Calculator

Speed, distance and time calculator: find average speed, distance traveled or travel time in mph, km/h, m/s or knots.

v = dt

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose the quantity you want under “Solve for”.
  2. Type the known values and pick their units: any combination works.
  3. The result updates as you type. Open “Show the steps” to see the substitution.

Average speed is distance divided by time, v = d/t. Rearranged, distance is d = v·t and time is t = d/v.

Mix any units: miles and minutes, kilometers and hours, meters and seconds. The result can be shown in mph, km/h, m/s, knots or ft/s.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to drive 300 miles at 60 mph?

t = d/v = 300 mi ÷ 60 mph = 5 hours.

Is this average or instantaneous speed?

Average speed over the whole trip. Instantaneous speed is the reading at one moment, such as a speedometer.
